9 people missing, 13 rescued after boat from Cuba capsizes off Key West
Miami, Florida – Coast Guard Cutter Thetis crewmember’s search and rescue operation continues for nine people believed to be missing in the waters southeast of Key West.
According to Coast Guard Cutter Thetis crewmembers, they rescued 13 people from the water after their vessel capsized, Tuesday, approximately 26 miles southeast of Key West.
According to survivors, they left Cuba and their vessel capsized with 22 people aboard at approximately 8 p.m. on Monday. The survivors said seven males and two females are missing.
Two helicopters and an airplane were called in to assist with the SAR operation.
On Wednesday morning, the Thetis along with the Cutter William Trump remain on scene and are continuing to search for the missing people.
