Despite Challenges, Coral Springs Charter Softball is outstanding
Coral Springs, Florida – The Coral Springs Charter softball team is 7-3 going into spring break, having completed more than half of the regular season.
This season, the Panthers have only lost in extra innings against nationally ranked Doral Academy, Wellington, and Park Vista. After only one loss in the previous season, CSC has outscored its opponents 67-3 in its last seven victories.
Despite playing without Florida Gulf Coast commit Kate Maston and reigning Pitcher of the Year Sophia Bertorelli, head coach Mark Montimurro believes his club is in a stronger position than it was the year before.
“Our schedule has been grueling, but hopefully, that will prepare us a bit better for a playoff run,” Montimurro said. “Courtney Wahlbrink has been phenomenal, and the position players have stepped up in Kate’s absence. We are looking forward to playing our best softball in late April into May.”
Gio Gurgel, who was sidelined by an injury last season, leads the team in batting average (.375) and has three home runs. With four home runs, Stephanie Basso leads the team. Jessica Sacca and Heather Robertson have also scored. For the Panthers, Alicia Tabil is also hitting.300.
With an ERA of.337, Wahlbrink has pitched in every game and struck out 92 batters in 62.1 innings. Later in the season, Montimurro hopes to have both of his superstars, Bertorelli and Maston, back. The Panthers’ next game is scheduled for April 3 at 6:30 p.m. versus Cooper City High School.
