New Sculpture at Broward Health Coral Springs to focus on community after MSD tragedy

Coral Springs, Florida – According to organizers, a new public art sculpture is planned at Broward Health Coral Springs that will reflect the “coming together” of the community following the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.

At the entrance to the hospital’s emergency room the 12-foot-tall “Spirit of Giving” sculpture of a woman, man, and child holding up a colorful heart will be built.

According to Jared Smith, the hospital’s CEO, the sculpture will represent how people in Coral Springs, Parkland, and elsewhere worked together after the tragedy to “put the pieces back, one by one.”

“We felt it was important to do something special on the hospital campus,” he said during a meeting of the city’s Public Art Committee.

The sculpture will be covered as part of the hospital’s contribution to the program when it completed an addition in 2018.

“We love to see artwork spread around the city,” said Julie Krolak, director of the city’s development services department that oversees the program.

The sculpture is designed by artist Stephen Canneto.

He will use stainless steel for the woman, man, and child figures and dichroic color glass for the heart.

“I love the colors and the concept is awesome,” said Mayor Scott Brook, who is a member of the committee.

According to Smith, the sculpture is expected to be built by February.
